I wasn't really a big fan of the Alf Garnett character and never really saw him in anything else so will bow to superior knowledge that he was a fine actor. A shame that he has passed away and not too far behind George Cole, another icon.

Very saddened by this news. Without doubt one of the greatest actors we've ever produced. I remember seeing him as Willie Loman, and I was just reading that Arthur Miller himself considered Warren's performance to be the finest interpretation of the role he had ever seen.

I believe that shows all or any of:
1) How good he was at claiming the character,
2) How clueless the current staff at the BBC are,
3) Somebody in the media saw the chance to associate bigotry with a good honest Jewish club like West Ham and "do their bit for the true chosen eleven.
